Berlin in January under 5cms of snow calls for a certain finesse when layering.

When it comes to G-Star RAW's AW 13 collection that means double, if not triple denim, or as we like to call it: the ultimate streetwear threat.

Building on their strong presence at the Bread & Butter trade fair (even Princess Beatrice and Eugenie popped by this year), Berlin became the latest location for the denim giant’s runway return, since departing New York Fashion Week some two years ago.

Staged in the 1960s St. Agnes Kirche church, which is defined by immense concrete blocks rising some 25 metres in the air with retro brown pavers underfoot, this season’s show space combined form, function and acoustics for a suitably raw theatrical thrill.

On the runway, lean legs met with voluminous outerwear dominated by a new saturated indigo hue (called Mazarine, and inspired by Toile de Chine), as well as army green parkas and maroon capes.

The new jean on the block? The super skinny Jeg, miraculously engineered to NEVER stretch out of shape, which was more than was appreciated by Stephen Dorff, watching from the audience as Michael Madsen (of Reservoir Dogs, Kill Bill and Donnie Brasco fame) recited a poem in a custom-made machete knife clad denim jacket (?). Afterwards it was onto the counter-culture after-party for dinner and dancing Berlin-style at Katerholzig: think massive graffiti decorated multi-level warehouse with room after room of enticing beats.
