Je t'aime moi non plus
Jane Birkin has touched down in Australia to play a series of shows honouring 20 years since her lover and mentor Serge Gainsbourg’s death. We stole a little time to ask her about her new show.
“I thought, well, it’s 20 years [since Gainsbourg’s death] – I should do him well this time. I did six concerts in America and I just got the clever idea of doing my show with Japanese musicians by pure coincidence. I’d been over after their big wave, and they were pleased to see me so I said ‘we should make a little solidarity concert’. I went back to Paris and made a much bigger concert for them with Catherine Deneuve to raise money for the Japanese Red Cross. Then I completely forgot that I was supposed to be going to America but remembered the Japanese musicians I played with, so I asked, could they come with me? [laughs].
"I wanted to make Serge’s songs stimulating, interesting and fascinating because I’ve done them so many ways already. It’ll be fun because I haven’t been back to Australia since Arabesque. I didn’t imagine people would be interested in Arabesque but they turned up [laughs].
"I think to sing is great because it gives you wings, and you can go everywhere with a song.”
