What’s with metal having the best documentaries?! What with American Juggalo already gracing these hallowed pages, The Decline Of Western Civilisation Part II – The Metal Years, and of course the legendary Heavy Metal Parking Lot, across various strains of it’s genie it’s spawned some killer viewing fodder. Until The Light Takes Us narrows in on the infamous Norwegian black metal scene, and all the gory, ritualistic events that have surrounded it. Amidst the serene setting of the Norwegian countryside (“Norway – it’s beautiful. It’s like New Zealand, only just grimmer”, describes Dark Throne’s Fenriz) and in the belly of the beast of this 1990’s era of the genre, the film chronicles the trajectory of Norwegian black metal from burning churches in rural Norway to finding it’s way onto the walls of fine art galleries in Milan. Centred on two lynchpins of the scene, one of whom’s currently in jail, it’s a fascinating look inside an intensely burning scene and the individuals that followed it’s beliefs to their bitter end.
