American Juggalo
For my first post on the RUSSH blog I’ve chosen something rather festive and family focused, albeit perhaps not the festival or the family more commonly associated with this time of year. For the uninitiated, a juggalo or juggalette is the title given to the devoted fans of American horrorcore rap/shock metal act Insane Clown Posse. The juggalo often comes with a certain style that one rocks outside business hours and the kind of shared outlook you might find in any other subculture based around a genre or style of music the world over. Each year in Novi, Michigan, Insane Clown Posse organise a Gathering Of The Juggalos which is basically a music festival they headline themselves and juggalos get together and celebrate another year of doing their thing. Sean Dunne was there to capture what went down last year, and quite frankly the resulting documentary is one of the more fascinating, life affirming music documentaries I’ve seen. Where you stand on Insane Clown Posse and the music is not really the point here, rather for anyone with an interest in youth and subcultures it’s a fascinating look at one of the more marginalised and mocked but arguably more unified tribes around.
