Sun Ra was certainly not of this earth. Physically yes, mentally a whole other place. A galaxy where music grows on trees and the planet looks as though through a shroomed out kaleidoscope, all the time. Touching on space travel and black politics wrapped in a soundtrack of Saturn jazz, a pure trip of crazy sets, truly cosmic costumes and timeless Chicago locations all saturated in dense colour, Space Is The Place does a pretty decent job of boiling Ra’s vision across 40 odd years of output into one 1974 released film.

Crushing on Coppola

The consistently strong, sympathetic and complex females who lead these films are so very real and each straddles naivety and wisdom in a way which isn’t intimidating, only intoxicating and always a little mysterious. For me, each of her films takes me back to a specific period of my life and it is one I remember with absolute clarity.
