Green with gold has never looked so good. Goldfaden MD, a skincare line made from natural ingredients and plant-based complexes, is serious about its product. No harsh ingredients, no parabens, and 100 per cent vegetarian formulas. Here, RUSSH chats to Lisa Goldfaden and Lauren Wolk of Goldfaden MD about the Doctor's scrub, home remedies, and their golden rules of skincare.
Tell us about the history of the brand ...
Lisa: Goldfaden MD was founded by Dr. [Gary] Goldfaden, who is a dermatologist in southern Florida. He built the brand around the problems his patients were having: sun damage, wrinkles, dark spots and dull skin. The line is all natural, dermatologist based, and hypoallergenic. It’s a great way to get effective skincare without having to give up on your natural lifestyle, and know what you’re putting on your skin. Doctor’s Scrub was the first product that Dr. Goldfaden created. He created the product to find an at-home alternative to microdermabrasion treatments in office. The product is what really put this brand on the map, it’s been almost 28 years since it was created.
What makes Doctor’s scrub different from other at-home microdermabrasion treatments?
Lauren: The scrub really creates an experience rather than just an application, so to speak. The scrub is [made of] ruby crystals before they become oxygenated and turn red. The reason Dr. Goldfaden uses them is because they’re perfectly round and fine. If you were to look at them under a microscope they don’t have those tiny edges like a sugar or salt scrub would have. That’s when people get into trouble with exfoliating because chunky sugar and salt scrubs scratch the skin and break blood vessels, causing redness. The ruby crystals really eliminate this.
What is your favourite at-home remedy?
Lisa: I love coconut oil for moisturising, though I don’t use it on my face. Hot water with lemon is great for detoxing. I think less is more; sometimes it’s OK to do one thing, or nothing, especially when your skin is reacting. Sometimes it’s good to just stop and give it a break. Lots of water, little sugar.
What is the biggest mistake you see people making with their skincare?
Lisa: Not exfoliating the face or not wearing SPF every day.
Lauren: Dr. Goldfaden approaches his skincare as a four-part regimen: cleansing, exfoliating, treating and sealing. A sealer would be your moisturiser or sunscreen. Without exfoliating your face the treatments that are being put on can’t even penetrate into the skin. Exfoliating can increase your treatment by up to 40 per cent, so it’s about regularly exfoliating. Without sunscreen you’re treating something that has already been damaged and taken away.
What’s next for the brand?
Lisa: We have a beautiful new line, Plant Profusion, which is based on plant cell extracts. It’s a four-piece collection with a proprietary formula, and all of the incredible herbs and plants that are proprietary just to the brand that help with anti-aging, collagen enhancement, brightness and cell turnover. And then [with] the core collection, we have some new interesting products coming out: a really cool serum, a great mask we’re working on. So it’s really just extending the core but offering an elevated piece.
