People rave about the Alpha Beta At Home Peel from Dr. Dennis Gross so while in New York recently we took time to go into Dr. Dennis Gross' practice to speak to the man himself about his range and how it all started.

How did Dr. Dennis Gross skincare start?
My background is very scientific. The reason I chose dermatology is because it allowed me to visually see science at work. My background included cancer research at the Sloan Kettering Institute Uptown. Long story short I then decided to go into dermatology and my patients were complaining that their products weren’t working and at the same time I could see there were no great active ingredients. Back then in 1995 there was very little science – it was more packaging and nothing was really delivering results. People wanted younger and healthier looking skin and I knew that what they did at home really mattered. They couldn’t see me everyday and treatments only once a month or so wasn’t sufficient. All these things led me to create a product line that could be used everyday, that had real science, that was effective.

What were the first products that you started with?
The first one was the Alpha Beta peel. There was a very poor understanding of what to do for peels; people thought it had to be harsh, people thought it was only going to be one ingredient that mattered.

What is your best selling product then and now?
I still think the peel is number one. Firstly there is nothing else that rivals it and the results are so good that it continues to grow as our company grows.

What are two things people can do at home to improve their skin?
One thing I think that is universal is to do the Alpha Beta peel because there you have anti-aging, the skin just has a beautiful quality to it and it is both immediate and long-term. If I had to pick a lifestyle thing I would say sunscreen. That’s critical. I mean if you just combine sunscreen with Alpha Beta peel you are both preventing and treating.
