Rainbow Styling

Giving head-to-toe colour blocking a whole new meaning, we caught up with Alex Brownsell, creative director of cult London salon Bleach - pioneer of this Euro summer’s rainbow hue and silver sheen hair trends.
Lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj aside, where did the dip-dye colour trend kick off from exactly?
The trend for dip-dye started in London, it was the start of the recession and girls were too poor to get their hair dyes so they ended up with recession roots, this was a cool look and lots of girls started just having their tips dyed.
At your Dalston salon you do everyone from Florence Welch to Pixie Geldof, what's the most popular shade right now?
At the moment loads of girls are having pastel highlights for the summer.
What's your pick of the next dye trend?
I think the next hair trend will be metallic and iridescent colours.
How did you advise your clients on what might suit them?
We have a lengthy consultation, we look at what they’re wearing, the condition of their hair and find out what they like. We also try to use colours that will flatter their eye and skin tones.
Are there any do's and don'ts for different colouring?
There aren't any massive dos and don’ts in the colouring process, but aftercare is very important. We have a Bleach Bible that we give to clients to make sure they look after their hair once it’s been coloured.
Who do you think has the best do at the moment?
Gwen Stefani’s hair in her new video is amazing, so white. Perfectly white.
