Trawling the racks of vintage stores, outlets and markets, is one of those activities that require about 12 coffees to even contemplate. It takes Olympic stamina, a rigorously trained eye, and, if you’re really serious, a packed lunch and full day.
Sure, the wins can be big, the scores adrenaline-fuelled and heady, but all things considered, wouldn’t we rather someone else do the exhausting legwork so we can cherry-pick the gems without parting from our doonas?
If you’re a vintage and pre-loved fashion obsessive – particular of the high-end collectible kind – but also have a life to live, online store Resee has got you covered. RUSSH chats to co-founder Sofia Bernardin about how a longing for the ‘ones that got away’ inspired the next big thing in online shopping.
Tell me a bit about Resee and the concept behind it?
Resee is a high-end re-commerce site that fuses the best in vintage and second hand with a sharp, editorial perspective. We focus on the best pieces from past collections, 70s Yves Saint Laurent, 80s Alaïa, 90s Helmut Lang, to more contemporary collections like Balenciaga by Nicolas Ghesquière or Céline by Phoebe Philo. Our idea is to bring these special items back to our customers that may have missed them a first time, giving them the opportunity to shop them again in [a] modern and relevant context.
Both you and your co-founder Sabrina Marshall previously worked at major magazines. What inspired the career change and prompted you to join forces to create Resee?
I would say it was more of an evolution than a career change. We were both pursuing exciting careers in fashion print, but we both certainly embody entrepreneurial spirits. One day over lunch at Toraya in Paris we were discussing our favourite pieces from past collections that ‘got away’, and how difficult it was to shop vintage online. To inspire a customer with a great look or educate them on a memorable season or designer. We knew at that moment that we could bring a strong and unique perspective to the market with our fashion backgrounds.
Have you always had a passion for vintage and pre-loved fashion?
Vintage and second-hand fashion is a great way to express one’s individuality. Today, fashion has become more accessible than ever: you can go to a party or a wedding and there are three girls wearing the same dress! This makes the need for individual style even more pressing, and there is nothing quite like wearing a special piece of vintage Yves Saint Laurent that no one else has.
