Derek Henderson has an extraordinary eye and ability to pick out an ordinary scene or person and make it interesting. He applies this to both his commercial work as well as his artwork and is one of the few photographers in Australasia able to successfully transcend both worlds.

Derek’s works are well received with audiences delighting in the unexpected – whether it be Hydrangea bushes shot so closely as to be verging on abstracted; a smoke filled bubble amazing the viewer with its simplicity and causing them to ask - “How the hell did he do that?”; or his haunting portraits of teenagers – their hopes, dreams and often their disappointments - poignantly captured in a single image.

Derek has a solo exhibition booked with Melanie Roger Gallery in August/September 2013. New work will be based on Henderson’s recollections of the Kaikoura UFO sightings of 1978 when Henderson was aged 15 and sleeping on the side of the road. Henderson will produce landscapes of New Zealand on the 10 x 8" camera very similar to what he has done in the past with his acclaimed The Terrible Boredom of Paradise and Mercy Mercer series. The results are very highly detailed photographs taken in the midday light so as not to be misty, murky images normally associated with UFO images. The highly detailed spacecraft will hover in these landscapes. The prints will be large - about 1200mm x 1000mm.
