PFW: Louis Vuitton AW 12

Talk about doing the locomotion. On the last day of the Paris week, moments after ten in the morning, a bespoke steam engine pulled into the Louis Vuitton created station at the Cour Carrée. It was, in a word, breathtaking. But tempting as it may be to get caught up in the showmanship of this Marc Jacobs spectacular, it is more important to reflect on the gravity of the collection. And dramatic it was. Turn of the century elegance bought on by an elongated silhouette finished with a tall hat created a powerful, towering female unlike anything we’ve seen for quite some time.
Long skirts and a-line jackets over cigarette pants were created from complex textures - brocades and jacquards, tinsel woven into tweed, heavy metal yarns to mirror Afghan blanket fabrics and patch-worked kangaroo leather - while adornment was unrestrained; hologram colour-forms and laser-etched plastic stones, bejewelled pony and seal appliques. Supremely confident, flanked by her porter, this larger than life girl is certainly not afraid to travel alone except, true to heritage with trunks and hand luggage. Proving a point; if there’s one thing better than owning one of these great pieces, it’s having them carried for you.
