LFW: Dion Lee does London

Bringing London fashion week to a close, we dropped in to see a familiar face make his LFW debut and to chat about his industrious new reflective fringing - after Kanye West had congratulated him - that is!
How are you? When did you touch down?
Two days ago so it has been straight from the airport to castings and fittings! I will be here for another week and then will go onto Paris.
Loving the cinematic background by the Askill boys you’ve used for the presentation. Tell us about the collection?
The starting point was about breathing … Yeah [he pauses, smiling]. And the clothes were taken from opening up tailoring and allowing these lung like strictures to come through. So this idea of air moving through the body with the light reflective fringing. I wanted that to be woven together to create vein-like structures.
It looks almost metallic … ?
It’s actually made of glass.
You have always loved glass; remember your mini skirts that you had to be careful sitting down in for fear of breaking a glass cylinder bead?
Yes! It’s basically a refrabrication of what they use in safety clothing so it bounces the light off things. I have been researching it for a while and with the fringing - this was the best way to take it out of being an industrial fabric.
With everything going on in Oz, your successful diffusion line etc, why London, why now?
I think London just feels right for where my brand is at the moment. There’s kind of an accessibility about London; the vibe is right.
So does this mean you are making the commitment to show overseas from now?
Yeah I would like to do a full runway presentation in September.
Brilliant! You know we’ll hold you to that.LFW: READ THE RUSSH INTERVIEW WITH BURBERRY'S CHRISTOPHER BAILEY
