Burberry Prorsum AW 11

When the show began with Dusty Springfield’s soulful and sultry You Don’t Own Me we realised we were in for something new from Christopher Bailey. Posh has replaced punk for AW 11. Busy in the Burberry archives of late, Bailey appropriated a little (or a lot) of Jean Shrimpton charm to his Kensington Gardens show yesterday. It was, more than anything, a play on the silhouette of the coat; bubble backed military coats, sculptural graphic gabardine with exaggerated sleeves, blanket coats in checked wool and trim military tunics. Black-and-white fur caps gave nod to the early swinging era when Shrimpton and her boyfriend David Bailey were mod icons. It was, as Dusty sang it, a time to be “young and free”.
